Why Abroadmode?

It started with a phone bill after two weeks in Thailand: 92 euros of data roaming, even though I thought mobile data was off. A few apps had helped themselves in the background. No scam, no error. Just a plan that bills per megabyte outside the EU.

On the next trip I tried an eSIM and compared first. What struck me: for the same country, a gigabyte costs 2 euros with one provider and 9 with another. And most comparison sites list prices with no date, long since out of date.

That became Abroadmode. We compare plans per destination, put the as-of date on every price, and do the honest math on how much data you need before each provider pays off.

And when you need nothing at all, we say that too. Within the EU your home plan usually covers you just fine. Selling you an eSIM you don't need is not our business model.

What Sets Us Apart

Plenty of eSIM comparisons online put the provider with the fattest commission on top and drop the date the price was last true. We earn through partner links too, and it says so at every link. But the ranking follows price per gigabyte and coverage, not commission.

Beyond that, the best plan depends on your trip. A weekend in New York is covered by a small package for a few euros, while four weeks in Japan with a hotspot for your laptop calls for something else entirely. We sort by trip type, not by one best-of list for everyone.

Abroadmode is made by people who travel with phone and suitcase regularly themselves and got fed up with their own roaming bills. Full provider details are in the imprint.

We compare providers using coverage maps, provider documentation and verified user reports. Every assessment states what it rests on.

A SIM built into your phone, onto which you load plan profiles digitally, usually by QR code in a few minutes. No plastic card needed, and your home number stays active alongside. Requirement: an eSIM-capable device without a carrier lock.

Within the EU, mostly yes. Your home plan largely works there like at home. It gets interesting outside: in the USA, Japan or Thailand many plans bill per megabyte or with pricey day passes. That's exactly where we do the math.
