How to Activate an eSIM on iPhone: Step by Step

How to Activate an eSIM on iPhone: Step by Step

The QR code is sitting in your inbox, your flight leaves in twelve hours, and the setting you need is buried somewhere in iOS. Activating an eSIM on an iPhone takes about two minutes, once you know where to tap.

1

Check your model and the carrier lock first

Model first: Apple says iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Then the carrier lock, a locked iPhone won't take a foreign eSIM abroad. Apple Support has you check at Settings > General > About, where Carrier Lock reads No SIM restrictions.

You'll also need the QR code, which providers email after purchase, eSIM FOX, one of our partners, works that way. What an eSIM is under the hood, we cover elsewhere.

Installing the eSIM: the actual steps

  1. Open Settings and tap Cellular.
  2. Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM, whichever Apple shows you.
  3. Choose Use QR Code, hold the code in the camera frame.
  4. No QR code? Tap Enter Details Manually and type the SM-DP+ address plus activation code.
  5. Confirm with Add Cellular Plan.

On iOS 17.4 or later, press and hold the QR code if it's an image in Mail or Safari, tap Add eSIM, then Continue and confirm. Transfer from a nearby iPhone moves your number to a new phone, not how a travel eSIM gets installed.

3

Switch data roaming on, or nothing happens

Roaming sounds like something to avoid, yet a travel eSIM roams on purpose, that's the whole idea. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and turn Data Roaming on for the travel line, not your home plan.

The second trap: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data decides which line carries your data. Leave your home plan selected and you're still paying home-network prices. Whether both lines run together is its own topic.

Scan, roam, done. Which provider is worth buying at your destination is separate. For Thailand we compared the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my phone eSIM compatible?

On the Apple side: iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Older models lack the hardware; no update fixes that. For Android it depends on manufacturer and model year.

Should data roaming be on or off for an eSIM?

On. A travel eSIM connects to a foreign network, which is what that switch controls. Turn it on for the eSIM line, off for your home SIM.

What if I never got a QR code?

Some providers send an SM-DP+ address and activation code instead, entered under Enter Details Manually. Others point you to their own app, which installs the eSIM for you.
