How to Top Up eSIM Data Mid-Trip: 3 Ways That Work

How to Top Up eSIM Data Mid-Trip: 3 Ways That Work

It always happens at the worst moment: eSIM data ran out, somewhere between the station and your rental. No drama, usually one tap in the app fixes it, no reinstall, no switching providers. But first, check what actually ran out.

1

Out of data, or out of time?

People mix these up constantly. According to Airalo, the validity period of a data package can't be extended (as of September 2026). If you top up esim data, you buy more gigabytes, not extra time.

2

Way 1: Top up esim data in the app

The fastest route. In the Airalo app you select your eSIM and tap "Top Up"; in Saily the button's called "Add Data". Pick a package and pay. No button? Then it isn't rechargeable. On to Way 2.

Airalo's help center says it warns you at 25% and 10% remaining (as of September 2026). Top up then and you probably won't need this article.

(Side note: often it's a photo backup syncing to the cloud eating your data, not Maps. Set that to Wi-Fi only before you leave.)

3

Way 2: Add a second eSIM

Sounds like a hack. It isn't. Even Airalo recommends downloading a second eSIM before a non-rechargeable plan runs dry. Mixing providers is fine, an iPhone from the XS onward stores five or six eSIM profiles at once.

Honestly, I think it's the most relaxed option, especially with the backup eSIM installed at home. Our beginner's guide to eSIMs abroad explains how multiple profiles coexist.

Way 3: No internet? Find Wi-Fi first

The catch: topping up needs a connection too. First instinct? Switch on your home carrier's roaming. Better not. According to UPeSIM, that can run €8 to €12 a day plus per-MB charges, depending on carrier and destination (as of September 2026). Our eSIM vs. roaming breakdown shows the two-week total.

A few minutes of Wi-Fi at a café, hotel or airport will do. UPeSIM says new data usually goes live within about 60 seconds.

5

More buffer next time

My guess? Most people buy too little because the smallest plan looks so cheap. Our guide on how much data you need on vacation does the math. My rule when I top up esim data: book the calculated amount, then keep a backup eSIM as a safety net.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I top up eSIM data without installing a new eSIM?

Yes, as long as your eSIM is rechargeable. You add data to the same profile through your provider's app.

Does a top-up extend the validity period?

No, a top-up only adds data. According to Airalo, an expired validity period can't be extended, so you'll need a new eSIM.

Do I need Wi-Fi to top up?

You need some connection to pay. At zero data, that means Wi-Fi, say at your hotel or a café.
