Receive SMS with an eSIM: Get 2FA Codes Abroad
Your travel eSIM has data, yet the bank code never appears. The message sent to your usual number goes to your home SIM or eSIM. To receive SMS with an eSIM setup abroad, you need to check that line separately.
Apple's travel eSIM guidance, dated September 17, 2026 keeps both lines active and uses the travel eSIM for data. If the roles are mixed up, see how to use both SIMs together.
Receive SMS with an eSIM: the 30-second check
The name means a quick check, not a guaranteed delivery time.
- Does the number saved in the account belong to your home line?
- Is that line switched on, and does it show a network name?
- Request one fresh code and use only the newest. Google says location and carrier affect delivery; after several requests, only the latest code works.
- Ordinary texts arrive, but the bank verification code abroad does not? The sending service is the likely problem. Try its official app, a backup method prepared earlier, or its known support channel.
If mobile data has failed too, troubleshoot the common eSIM problems abroad separately.
Receive SMS abroad with the home line on
Roaming data off doesn't mean line off. Regular SMS still needs a roaming network. Google Pixel Help shows that texts and data can use different SIMs. The travel eSIM roaming guide covers the switches.
In the regulated European roaming area, incoming texts have no extra fee according to the EU consumer portal, reviewed January 7, 2026. Delivery can still fail. Ships and aircraft may use costlier satellite networks.
Prepare for 2FA abroad
Set up a backup factor before the trip if one is offered. NIST SP 800-63B, dated August 26, 2025 treats SMS authentication as restricted and calls for alternatives. An authenticator app, passkey, or backup code only helps when it's ready before you travel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a data-only eSIM receive verification texts?
No. A code sent to your usual number reaches the active home SIM or eSIM. The data-only travel eSIM supplies mobile data in this setup.
Does roaming data need to be on for the home SIM?
No. Roaming data can stay off. The home line itself must remain enabled and have mobile service through an available roaming network.
Why is only my bank code missing?
If ordinary texts arrive, the bank or its messaging provider may be blocking that message. Use the official banking app, a backup code prepared earlier, or the bank's known support channel.
