Why the eSIM needs roaming
Your travel eSIM connects through a local partner network, so your phone reads it as roaming even though it is the plan you already paid for. According to Holafly, data roaming has to be active for the eSIM while your home operator's roaming stays off.
iPhone: per number, not per phone
On Dual SIM and Dual eSIM devices, Apple documents data roaming as a per line setting: Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > tap the number > Cellular Data Options > Data Roaming. Apple adds that the toggle defaults to off after a new SIM is installed, so a freshly added eSIM is probably offline at first.
Android: the path depends on the maker
On Pixel phones Google puts the switch under Network & internet > SIMs > the relevant SIM. Samsung Galaxy owners get a different route, Samsung lists Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming. And on some Android phones that toggle covers both SIMs at once, so it is worth checking on your own device.
EU or not EU?
Inside the EU this rarely bites, because the EU roaming rules mean your home SIM runs at domestic rates anyway.
