eSIM not working abroad: the most common causes and fixes

You land, switch off airplane mode, and the status bar says No Service. Your eSIM is not working, even though the install went fine at home. Annoying. But the causes are usually small and boring, and they're unrelated, so no single trick fixes all of them.

1

Installed is not the same as activated

This is the most common false alarm of all. Settings say Active, and your brain reads that as running. It isn't. According to Holafly, the plan only starts once your phone connects to a local network at your destination, not when you install it at home. So it's worth turning on data roaming and giving it a few minutes.

2

Things worth checking, in any order

None of these matters more than the others, and there's no official sequence to follow. Work through them.

  • Data roaming is off on the eSIM line. Probably the most common cause of all. Apple describes the switch as per-line.

  • Wrong line set as the data line? With two active numbers, your data quietly goes out over the other one.

  • If the network search is stuck, Apple Support suggests airplane mode for at least 15 seconds, then off again. No luck? Restart.

  • The APN is missing or wrong. The right values are in your provider's confirmation email. This hits Android far more than iPhone.

  • A carrier lock, or a handset with no eSIM hardware. teltarif.de reports German carriers stopped selling locked phones years ago, so this mostly hits older or imported handsets.

3

Sometimes it isn't your phone

If everything checks out and you still have nothing, the provider may be the problem. Outages happen. And which partner network a provider uses at your destination varies a lot; for Thailand, for example, that's in the Thailand provider comparison. Honestly, that's hard to judge from outside.

Buying another plan won't fix a roaming switch. For the next trip, though, a provider with support you can actually reach helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my eSIM not working when it shows as active?

Because active only means the profile sits on your phone. Holafly says the plan starts with the first connection to a local network at your destination, not before. Until then, the display looks more reassuring than it is.

Do I have to switch on data roaming for a travel eSIM?

Usually yes. Apple describes it as a per-line switch on dual-SIM devices, so it can be on for your home SIM and off for the eSIM. Check the eSIM line specifically.
