Travel eSIM Prices 2026: Are They Falling? A Fact Check

Travel eSIM Prices 2026: Are They Falling? A Fact Check

Juniper Research estimates that revenue per gigabyte of travel eSIM data fell over 10 percent in two years (press release, 9 December 2025). Does the pack price fall too? We checked eSIM prices 2026 against archived provider pages.

1

eSIM price comparison: what we compared, and how

Compared: Airalo, Saily, Holafly and eSIM FOX, each at least twice, read off archived Wayback Machine copies plus a live fetch on 19 September 2026. We tested and measured nothing. Abroadmode works with some providers; this page has no partner links.

Caveat: the archive crawler sees prices for its own location, in the snapshot of 16 June 2026 even in Canadian dollars.

The snapshots: Airalo and Saily stay flat, Holafly eases a little

Provider Pack Before After Change
Airalo (14 Jan 2024 / 13 Sep 2025) 1 GB, 7 days $5.00 $5.00 0%
Airalo 3 GB, 30 days $13.00 $13.00 0%
Airalo 5 GB, 30 days $20.00 $20.00 0%
Airalo 10 GB, 30 days $37.00 $37.00 0%
Saily (4 Sep 2024 / 13 Jul 2026) 1 GB, 7 days $4.99 $4.99 0%
Saily 3 GB, 30 days $12.49 $12.49 0%
Saily 5 GB, 30 days $19.49 $19.49 0%

Saily's snapshots are 22 months apart, Airalo's about 20: identical prices. Holafly cut its 7-day unlimited pack by $2.40 and its other durations by 0.8 to 1.9 percent.

Travel eSIM prices: where things actually move

50 GB, 30 days €58.99 €42.99 -27%

At eSIM FOX, 3 to 10 GB packs cost 7 to 20 percent more, packs from 20 GB 27 to 31 percent less, and the 1 GB pack stayed at €2.99. Per gigabyte that's a rise up to 10 GB and a fall from 20 GB (our reading). The page gives no reason but shows discount banners. We don't know whether €19.99 for 20 GB lasts.

Airalo dropped its entry point between the snapshot of 15 May 2026 (still 1 GB for three days from $5.00) and the snapshot of 16 June 2026 (unlimited only). In the snapshot of 7 September 2026 it starts at $11.50 (three days unlimited). The five-dollar option is gone, not discounted. Now: eSIM comparison for Europe.

4

Why? And where no source helps

Juniper analyst Molly Gatford names competition as the cause: vendors shifted from protecting margins to retaining customers, "by lowering package prices". But Juniper reports revenue per gigabyte, not pack prices, and that also falls when buyers switch to bigger packs while no list price moves. That's our reading, not Juniper's.

Don't confuse that with the EU wholesale cap for 2026, €1.10 per gigabyte, a price between operators (EU roaming in 2026).

Some airlines bundle eSIMs into the booking, SAS for one (a free eSIM per Travolution, 16 June 2026; more in our free SAS eSIM piece). Does that push prices down? Honestly, we found no source saying so.

5

The exchange rate does some of the work

A dollar price that never changes still looks cheaper or dearer in euros. Airalo's $37 for 10 GB stood unchanged in the snapshots of 14 January 2024 and 13 September 2025. By the ECB reference rate that was €33.81 on 12 January 2024 and €31.58 on 12 September 2025; unchanged, it would be €32.29 on 18 September 2026.

Billed in dollars, the price tag stood still and your bank statement didn't. Euro pages like Simbye and eSIM FOX (fetched 19 September 2026) skip the effect.

6

One country instead of a region

Simbye charges €5.95 for 5 GB (30 days) in Austria (fetched 19 September 2026). At Airalo, a 42-country Europe pack with 5 GB (30 days) cost €18.00 in the snapshot of 9 April 2026; it's no longer offered.

Two different products, and the comparison limps on purpose. If you're only flying to Vienna, you don't need 41 of the 42 countries, but that alone doesn't explain the gap. Coverage by country: Simbye and eSIM FOX.

7

Verdict: book now or wait?

Whether waiting pays depends on pack size. Need 20 GB or more? eSIM FOX packs are up to 31 percent below their 8 December 2025 snapshot price. Only maps and messaging? No help there: 1 GB for a week still costs €2.99 (fetched 19 September 2026). How much you need: our piece on holiday data volume.

Outside the EU, look first at eSIM vs roaming in the USA, worked out for two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are travel eSIM data packs getting cheaper?

Not uniformly. Airalo (until 13 September 2025) and Saily (until 13 July 2026) show unchanged list prices; Airalo dropped its fixed-GB packs. At eSIM FOX, packs from 20 GB got up to 31 percent cheaper, 3 to 10 GB packs up to 20 percent dearer (8 December 2025 versus 19 September 2026).

How much does an eSIM cost for a week in Europe?

Mostly the pack decides. One gigabyte for seven days costs €2.99 at eSIM FOX and an unlimited week €23.95 at Simbye (both fetched 19 September 2026), $27.00 at Airalo and $27.50 at Holafly (snapshot 7 September 2026). The currencies differ.

Is it worth booking an eSIM instead of roaming now?

Inside the EU, rarely: your home tariff keeps working within its fair-use limits. Outside the EU it gets interesting once your carrier charges daily passes. Our cost breakdown for two weeks in the USA shows how wide the gap can get.
