Pixel 11 eSIM only: Why this is still a US-only story

This is the part most coverage skips past. 9to5Google says it outright: phones in other regions still include a physical SIM slot, and the whole thing is "largely a US-only matter".

GSMArena's spec database lists two separate SIM configurations for the same handset. "Nano-SIM + eSIM" for the global variant, dual-eSIM for the US. A regional split at spec-sheet level carries more weight than a rewritten press release, the kind of detail launch-week chatter usually glosses over.

One honest caveat, though. Google has not yet published a Pixel 11 support page carrying this restriction, in German or, as far as we can tell, anywhere else. What does exist is the Pixel help page for the previous generation, where the restriction is tagged "[Nur USA]", meaning US only. For the Pixel 10. So the all-clear for Europe rests on the tech press, the spec sheet and that precedent, not on a fresh statement from Mountain View.

"Still spared" means exactly that. Nobody has promised the next generation gets the same treatment.

Google has done this before. The Pixel 10 series was the first to ship without a SIM tray in the US back in 2025, as droid-life reported at launch. That went on sale 28 August 2025.

Two generations in a row is a pattern.

There is one exception worth knowing: the Pixel 11 Pro Fold keeps its tray, even in the US. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold did the same. The technology behind it is moving too. The new SGP.32 eSIM standard is the industry's own bet on a SIM-tray-free future.

Here is where it gets interesting, whichever model is in your pocket. The old travel routine: buy a local SIM at the airport, pull out your own, and hope the tiny card survives the trip in your wallet.

That routine is dying. Tray or no tray. If you're still fuzzy on how eSIM actually works abroad, that's the place to start.

US Pixel 11 units hold up to 8 eSIM profiles, with 2 of them set up at once. In practice: your home number stays reachable while a travel eSIM handles the data. Both profiles can be installed before you leave via QR code, per Google's Pixel help, which honestly matters more than the tray disappearing.

There is a limitation to know about. teltarif.de reported on 20 August 2026 that the Pixel 11 modem supports dual-SIM-dual-active in hardware, but Google switched the feature off in software. What is left is dual-SIM-dual-standby: two profiles installed, only one connected at a time. Most travellers will never notice. If you need two numbers reachable in parallel, it grates.

None of this is a Google quirk. Apple started US-only eSIM-only iPhones in 2022 with the iPhone 14, and we looked at the current round of that in iPhone 18 Pro eSIM only. Google has been following since 2025.

Our read, and this is speculation: the SIM tray is not vanishing from Europe this year, but it is going. Getting comfortable with eSIM profiles now saves you the scramble at the gate later.
