How to Delete and Reinstall an eSIM Without Losing Your Plan

Sounds harmless. It isn't, three hours before a flight.
Apple is blunt about it: erase an eSIM and you have to contact your carrier for a new one. The old code won't work twice. Telekom says the same in drier German: the activation code goes invalid as soon as the profile has been transferred once.

Before you delete anything
New phone right before a trip. Don't delete the eSIM and rescan the old QR code on the new handset. Phone-to-phone transfer is the move, because the code is already spent and a second scan just fails.
Factory reset after a trip. During an iPhone reset, iOS asks separately whether to keep or erase the eSIM. That one tap gets skipped constantly, and there's no undo.

What Airalo, Holafly and Saily actually offer
Airalo has a "Deleted your eSIM?" flow in the app that checks whether a reinstall is possible for your plan at all.
Holafly is the documented exception: up to four installs of the same eSIM, but only on the same phone, never a different one (as of September 2026).
With Saily, there's no way around support once the original activation code is dead.
On a German carrier plan? Look for eSIM-Gerätewechsel in the customer portal. Telekom and o2 handle it in-app, Vodafone may charge depending on the route.

Can I reinstall a deleted eSIM?
Usually not with the same QR code, since it only covers the first install. If your plan hasn't expired, check the provider's app before writing it off.
What happens if I delete my eSIM?
The profile leaves the chip and the line drops immediately. Any remaining data still sits with the provider, reachable only with a new code. With some travel eSIMs the plan is gone for good. My eSIM will not delete. What now?
An active connection or an MDM profile often blocks it. Restart, airplane mode, second attempt. If your real problem is just no signal, leave the eSIM in place and fix the connection instead.
