iPhone Duo eSIM: German launch planned for October 23
The iPhone Duo eSIM design does away with the physical SIM tray. Apple's first foldable iPhone is due in Germany on October 23, 2026, according to Apple's September 9 announcement. For travelers, that removes a familiar fallback: buying a physical SIM at the airport and putting it in the phone.
What Apple has announced for Germany
Preorders are scheduled for October 16. Apple lists Germany among the markets with availability from October 23, 2026. Engadget's announcement coverage reports the same preorder and availability dates. Both are still ahead as of October 5.
An eSIM-only design worldwide doesn't mean every market will get the phone on the same day. Nor does the announcement confirm support from a particular carrier.
An airport SIM is no longer a fallback
The iPhone Duo specifications explicitly rule out physical SIM cards. A plastic SIM bought after landing won't fit. Whether a local carrier sells a suitable eSIM instead is something to check for your destination.
If you've always transferred the card from your old phone to the new one, ask your home carrier how to set up your existing plan as an eSIM on the Duo before switching devices. Our iPhone eSIM activation guide covers the general process; it isn't a hands-on Duo walkthrough.
The Duo specifications list two active eSIMs and storage for eight or more profiles. Storage and active connections are different limits. Apple's Dual SIM guidance says only one line can use cellular data at a time. That doesn't double data speeds or guarantee a working backup connection.
Check the plan as well as the phone
To use another carrier, your iPhone must be unlocked, according to Apple's international eSIM travel guidance. You'll still need to check whether your chosen travel provider supports the Duo and whether its plan covers your destination. Apple's general travel advice doesn't certify individual travel-eSIM brands for the Duo. A setup guide for a Pro model isn't confirmation either.
You might not need a separate plan at all. If your home contract includes suitable roaming, that remains an option. Our explanation of how an eSIM works abroad covers the difference between roaming on your existing service and adding another profile.
Keeping your home line enabled alongside travel data can be useful. But Apple warns that your home eSIM may still incur roaming charges. Even with the travel eSIM selected for data, your enabled home line remains subject to your home plan's charges. Our guide to data roaming with a travel eSIM explains the settings in more detail.
If a physical SIM fallback matters to you, that's a reason to reconsider the phone rather than assume an eSIM will always replace it. The practical downsides of eSIM versus a physical SIM are worth weighing before changing phones.
Frequently Asked Questions

How many eSIMs does the iPhone Duo support?
The Duo specifications, researched October 5, 2026, list two active eSIMs and storage for eight or more profiles. Apple's September 17, 2026 Dual SIM guidance says only one line can use cellular data at a time. Stored profiles aren't simultaneous active connections.
